SPENCER DOUGLASS CROCKWELL (1904-1968)
"Christmas Club - Merriest Way to Save!"

Advertising illustration for The Christmas Club, A Corporation, 1966. Oil on board. 260x290 mm; 11½x10½ inches, matted and framed to 19x19½ inches. Signed in lower left image.

The Christmas Club was a special-purpose savings account offered by various banks and credit unions in the 20th century. Bank customers would deposit a set amount of money each week into a savings account, and receive the money back at the end of the year for Christmas shopping. Crockwell's illustration captures the excitement of holiday shopping and dominance of consumer culture.
